The Immigrant

She wears the Nativity on her clothes in September
and sucks English from the air in puffs.
Damp grey threads defy supplantation,
telegraphing words to her tongue; they
misshape familiar words between her lips
like broken stitches,
pronouncing her ever foreign in an adopted homeland.
